What illumination percentage means
Illumination is the percentage of the Moon’s apparent Earth-facing disk receiving sunlight. It ranges continuously from near 0% at New Moon to near 100% at Full Moon.
Why the number is an approximation
Displayed values are rounded to one decimal place. At First and Last Quarter, roughly 50% is lit—the word quarter describes orbital progress, not one quarter of the disk.
