Lunar Eclipse: A Clear Guide

A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth’s shadow falls across the Moon. It can happen only near Full Moon, but the orbital geometry must also align near a node.

Why eclipses are uncommon

The Moon’s orbit is tilted about five degrees to Earth’s orbital plane. During most Full Moons, the Moon passes above or below Earth’s shadow. Eclipse seasons occur when the Sun is near a crossing point, called a node.

Total, partial, and penumbral

During a total eclipse, the entire Moon enters Earth’s dark umbra. In a partial eclipse, only part does. A penumbral eclipse passes through the lighter outer shadow and can be subtle. The copper color during totality comes from sunlight filtered and bent through Earth’s atmosphere.

Viewing safely

Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is safe to watch with unaided eyes, binoculars, or a telescope. This page intentionally does not invent future eclipse dates; event scheduling will be added only with a verified eclipse-specific dataset.
