Calculate Moon age for a date

What lunar age means

Moon age is elapsed time since the most recent astronomical New Moon. Individual New-Moon-to-New-Moon cycles vary around the 29.53-day mean, so Moon Exactly searches for the actual preceding New Moon rather than converting phase angle into a fixed-length cycle.

What it does not mean

This value is not the Moon’s geological age, which is measured in billions of years. It is also different from phase angle: two values closely track one another, but the Moon’s changing orbital speed means they are not interchangeable.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

How is Moon age calculated?

It is the elapsed UTC duration between the requested instant and the preceding calculated New Moon.

Why does another site differ?

Some calculators estimate age from phase angle or a fixed 29.53-day cycle, while this page uses the preceding event timestamp.

Does Moon age depend on location?

No. It is based on global astronomical instants; only local clock labels differ.
